Washington D.C., officially known as the District of Columbia, is the capital city of the United States. It is a federal district that is not part of any state and is situated on the east bank of the Potomac River. Established by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. houses the federal government and is the location of key government institutions, including the White House, the Capitol Building, and the Supreme Court.
